Importance of the Test

There are many ways to diagnose the chikungunya virus infection. However, it would be best if you had serological tests, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), which help you confirm the presence of IgG and IgM anti-chikungunya antibodies. IgM antibody levels are highest 4 to 5 weeks after the onset of illness and stay active for about two months. The virus can be directly detected in the blood during the first week of infection. Thus, we recommend that the samples collected during the first week of illness be tested in both ways, virological and serological methods [incredibly reverse transaction—polymerase chain reaction (RT—PCR)]. Different RT-PCR methods are available. They are variable sensitivity. Some are good for clinical diagnostics. RT—PCR products from clinical samples may also be used for genotyping of the virus, allowing comparisons. Chikungunya virus infection mainly affects patients with an acute onset of fever and polyarthralgia, and it widely affects the travelers who have been traveling in the areas with virus transmission.
